Mr James Gallagher qualified in Dentistry at Guy’s Hospital, University of London in 1989 and continued to complete his basic training in Oral and Maxilofacial Surgery at Guy’s Hospital and Bromley Hospitals NHS Trust in 1991. He completed his Medicine degree at the United Medical and Dental Schools (UMDS, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals) qualifying with Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB, BS, University of London) in 1996. During this time he also completed the Fellowship in Dental Surgery qualification at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Basic surgical training was completed in Lewisham, Poole and Bournemouth with higher surgical training in Oral and Maxilofacial Surgery completed in the Northern Ireland Regional Centre for Plastic, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Belfast. This provided excellent training in trauma and facial deformity and included six months spent at the West of Scotland Regional Maxilofacial Service in Glasgow, which was, and still is, the busiest UK Oral Maxillofacial Head and Neck Cancer Unit.
Mr Gallagher was appointed as a Consultant to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust in 2006 and is currently the Clinical Service Lead of this Department. He is also a member of the local skin cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT), ath Northampton General Hospital. As well as many local roles, Mr Gallagher plays an important role in national quality assurance for his specialty, in his role as the Chairman of the Clinical Effectiveness Subcommitee of British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS). This position also involves working as the BAOMS representative on the Clinical Standards Committe of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Referrals are accepted from GP’s and dentists. Services offered include assessment and treatment of facial bone fractures, facial soft tissue injuries and secondary deformity resulting from trauma. Diagnosis and treatment of conditions causing facial discomfort and salivary gland disorders. Head and neck skin surgery, preprosthetic surgery and oral and dentoalveolar surgery.
Mr Gallagher is very active in medical education and training and is the lead Educational Supervisor for the Dental Foundation Trainees at Northampton General Hospital as well as being a Consultant Supervisor and Trainer for the Oral and Maxillofacial Specialty Trainees at Northampton General Hospital. He has taught and organised many courses and training days, including lectures at the Royal Society of Medicine and course convenor of the Emergency Skills in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Course at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Mr Gallagher has a young family and really enjoys spending time with them outside of his clinical commitments.
