Training: Dr Ball studied medicine at Liverpool University obtaining an honours degree in anatomy.
Experience: Dr Ball subsequently trained in Merseyside, Cheshire and Brisbane, Australia before undertaking research in echocardiography and intravascular ultrasound in Leeds. He was appointed as St Helens & Knowsley Hospitals first consultant cardiologist in 1996. Cardiology Experience: Dr Ball has a particular interest in coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and adult congenital heart disease. As head of cardiology, he developed the Coronary Care Unit and introduced coronary angiography, transoesophageal, stress, contrast and 3-D echocardiography in addition to tilt table testing, nuclear cardiology and permanent pacemaker implantation. He has been lead cardiologist for the design and commissioning of the new cardiology departments at St Helens and Whiston Hospitals. He retains an active interest and role in cardiac imaging. He is the trust lead for echocardiography and is leading on the introduction of cardiac CT to St Helens & Knowsley Hospitals.
