Personal profile

Mr Tate trained in London and Hong Kong. He has been a consultant surgeon in Bath since 1993. He is qualified in both upper and lower gastrointestinal surgery and has considerable experience in abdominal hernia surgery.

Mr Tate's major interest is 'keyhole surgery' and his practice is almost exclusively this type of operation whenever applicable. He was at the forefront of the research in and development of laparoscopic surgery in 1990 when it first became available. Since then he has carried out a wide range of operations using keyhole techniques.

As a member of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons Executive Committee, Mr Tate organised the National Conference of Laparoscopic Surgeons and continues to teach keyhole techniques both internationally and locally. He has seen dramatic changes in patient recovery and outcomes with this type of surgery.

His main clinical areas of interest are surgery for gallstones, colorectal cancer and hernia surgery including recurrent and large incisional hernias. He is passionate about achieving the best possible outcomes and maintaining a minimally invasive approach.
