Dr Menakaya qualified in 1991 as the best graduating student in mental health. After house jobs in paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, medicine and surgery, he commenced his post graduate training in paediatrics, neonatology, paediatric cardiology and paediatric oncology in London and Hampshire. He gained his membership of the Royal College of Physicians of London during this time.
He was appointed a specialist registrar in paediatrics in 1997 and spent 4 years in hospitals in the West Midlands including the world renowned Birmingham Childrens Hospital, developing his expertise in paediatrics. From 1999 -2001, he was seconded for two years as a fellow in neonatal medicine at the Mercy Hospital for Women in Melbourne, Australia.
Dr Menakaya was appointed a consultant neonatal paediatrician in 2003 to Hillingdon Hospital Middlesex and in 2007 was appointed honorary consultant in paediatric gastroenterology at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, London. He has considerable expertise in newborn cranial ultrasound scanning and can screen the newborn baby for major congenital heart disease.
His professional interests include neonatal medicine, child hood nutrition particularly poor weight gain and paediatric gastroenterology. In addition to his duties as a consultant paediatrician, his other roles include his work as a college tutor, mentor for doctors in training and trainer for hospital professionals in newborn life support skills. He is also a qualified instructor with the advanced life support group.
