Mr Tolia graduated from Glasgow University in 1975 and after obtaining his FRCS from Edinburgh, he moved to Nottingham to complete his senior registrar training. He was first appointed a Consultant at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor in 1985 and then moved as a Consultant to Luton in 1996 at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital. He then left the NHS to become a full time private consultant in 2012.
Mr Tolia is very experienced having performed around 20,000 cataracts and around 300 lasers per annum. Mr Tolia is a general ophthalmologist but has developed a special interest in treating retinal disease, glaucoma and was one of the first people in the country to carry out laser refractive surgery at the Corneal Laser Centre in 1991/2.
With his general ophthalmology background he is able to take an overall view of an eye rather than small specific areas. This has considerable advantages when dealing with multiple problems such as an eye in a diabetic with retinal disease, secondary glaucoma and cataract.
