Personal Profile

Dr Joel Mawdsley has a broad experience of all aspects of general gastroenterology including upper gastrointestinal (GI) conditions/symptoms, such as dysepsia (indigestion) and reflux (heartburn), and lower gastrointestinal conditions such as bloating, rectal bleeding, change in bowel habit, and irritable bowel syndrome. His focus is on delivering high quality patient focused care to all of his patients. 

Joel has a particular interest in inflammatory bowel disease having undertaken research and published in this area. He also has extensive experience in both upper and lower GI endoscopy, having been accredited Bowel Cancer Screening Endoscopist for a number of years and now being the clinic lead of the South-East London Endoscopy Network. 

Joel undertook Pre-Clinical Medical Studies at Queens' College, Cambridge University obtaining a First-Class Honours Degree and winning the Max Bull Prize for Medicine. He studied Clinical Medicine at Barts and the Royal London Hospital Medical School, graduating with Honours in Clinical Pharmacology. As a Specialist Registrar, he trained on the North-West Thames Gastroenterology rotation, working at St Mark's Hospital, St Mary's Hospital, Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospitals, and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. From 2005-2007, he was a Clinical Research Fellow at the Royal London Hospital, and successfully completed Doctorate of Medicine on the role of stress and psychoneuroimmunology in inflammatory bowel disease. In 2008, Joel took up a consultant position at West Middlesex University Hospital, where he was the clinical lead for the inflammatory bowel disease service and the training lead for endoscopy. It was during this time that he became an accredited bowl cancer screening endoscopist. This required passing additional assessments in endoscopy and achieving high quality endoscopy key performance indicators. 

In 2017, he moved to the prestigious gastroenterology department at Guys and St Thomas Hospital, where he was initially clinical lead for the inflammatory bowel disease service before becoming co-clinical lead for the overall gastroenterology department. Joel has an active interest in teaching and medical education, having been the President of the Gastroenterology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine and the current co-chair of the London Inflammatory Bowel Disease Forum Committee. Joel is also involved in training for Junior Doctors, having been the training lead for core medical trainees whilst at West Middlesex University Hospital and currently being the Joint Training Program Director for gastroenterology training in South London. 

Joel also continues to maintain an interest in research with his main academic area continuing to be in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. he continues to publish in this area and be involved in research studies in this regard. He has presented at both regional, national, and international conferences. 

Joel lives in the Kingston area with his family. He enjoys going for the occasional run, slowly learning the piano, and spending time with his children.
