Prof Townend was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Cardiology at the University of Birmingham in 1997 and Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust in 2002.
Prof Townend qualified in Medicine at Birmingham University in 1983. He gained his MRCP in 1986 during general medical training in Birmingham. He then trained in cardiology at St Georges Hospital London and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.
He undertook research at the University of Birmingham leading to his MD in 1994.
His main field of interest is in the treatment of coronary artery disease. He is part of the 24/7 o call service at the Queen Elizabeth for primary angioplasty.
He also has a role in the management of severe heart failure including assessment for VAD therapy and heart transplantation.
He has been clinical lead for cardiology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital since January 2011.
Prof Townend has an extensive research interest primarily in to the field of cardio-renal disease and is currently running a number of BHF funded projects.
