Personal Profile

Jonathan qualified from Nottingham University Medical School in 1990. He taught anatomy at Leeds University Medical School from 1991-2. He moved to Manchester Royal Infirmary in 1992, where he completed basic surgical training. Higher surgical training in orthopaedics was on the North West Rotation, undertaken at hospitals in and around Manchester from 1996-2001. 

He completed a specialist training fellowship year from 2001-2002, comprising of six months joint replacement fellowship at Wrightington Hospital and 6 months with distinguished knee specialist Dr John Bartlett in Melbourne, Australia.

Jonathan was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Wythenshawe Hospital in 2002.

Clinical Interests

Jonathan's practice is predominantly specialist knee surgery for both adults and children. He is actively involved with all aspects of knee trauma and he is a founder member of the Greater Manchester Specialist Knee Injury Network, which has been created to improve the management of complex knee injuries in the city. Jonathan's specialist knee practice covers all aspects of knee injuries and conditions, treatment and surgery (ligament, cartilage and meniscus). He also performs all types of knee replacement procedures including partial, total and revision knee replacement.

Jonathan has a special interest in knee joint preservation surgery which includes osteotomy (realignment surgery) either alone or in conjunction with chondral (joint surface cartilage) restoration. He is part of the teaching faculty for the Northern Osteotomy Course which is an internationally recognised course for surgeon training. He treats a number of local professional athletes from football, rugby league and union, cycling and taekwondo.

Jonathan takes referrals from local knee colleagues for help with the management of complex knee trauma and conditions. He has performed the following numbers of soft tissue procedures:

  • 4000 knee arthroscopy (keyhole surgery)
  • 650 ACL reconstructions
  • 20 ACL repairs
  • 50 revision ACL reconstructions
  • 50 other ligament reconstructions (PCL, MCL, LCL, PLC)
  • 60 MPFL reconstruction (kneecap stabilisation)
  • 180 meniscal repairs and two meniscal transplants.

With regard to knee joint preservation he has performed 135 osteotomy procedures and 30 major cartilage resurfacing procedures (ACI/MACI/OATS/MegaOATS) in addition to 200 microfracture procedures.

His joint replacement numbers are 1300 total knee replacements, 190 unicompartmental knee replacements, 90 revision knee replacements and 670 total hip replacements.
