Mr Joseph Varghese is a consultant general surgeon at BMI The Beaumont Hospital, Bolton and The Royal Bolton Hospital. He specialises in upper GI and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, with a particular interest in reflux, gall bladder and hernias. He also specialises in endoscopies, colonoscopies and endoscopic removal of gall stones from the bile duct (ERCP). He provides lymph node biopsies and laparoscopic splenectomise for the haematologists.
Mr Varghese studied medicine at Mangalore University, India. He completed his basic and higher surgical training in the prestigious North West of Scotland, Aberdeen, completing his Surgical Training Programme. He has been fortunate to have been trained under various surgical pioneers and have gained invaluable expertise from them. He has a strong interest in research, audit and training. Following various laparoscopic training programmes in Paris, Mr Varghese undertakes day case laparoscopic procedures.
Mr Varghese is the clinical lead for upper GI and Hepatobiliary cancers at The Royal Bolton Hospital. Furthermore, he is the clinical lead for training in endoscopies at The Royal Bolton Hospital.
He is a member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He is also a member of the British Medical Association and a member of the Medical Society of Manchester as well as Bolton.
