Dr Kamal Nathavitharana is a Consultant Paediatrician with more than thirty years’ experience in paediatric medicine. His sub-speciality interests are paediatric gastroenterology, mucosal immunology, nutrition and food allergy.
Having qualified from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka with First Class Honours, his PhD thesis at the University of Birmingham was on the immunology of breast milk. Dr Nathavitharana has maintained his sub-speciality interest in mucosal immunology, gastrointestinal disorders and food allergy.
Dr Nathavitharana is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Birmingham Medical School and is an Honorary Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Warwick Medical School. He is also an Associate Postgraduate Dean at Health Education England – West Midlands (formerly West Midlands Deanery).
Dr Nathavitharana has a lifelong enthusiasm for cricket and continues to derive enormous pleasure, as both a player and spectator. He also enjoys travel, music and the arts.
Dr Nathavitharana’s paediatric clinical experience includes seeing children from birth to adolescence, with a range of general paediatric problems. These include failure to thrive, food allergy, heart murmurs, constipation/diarrhoea, abdominal pain, breathlessness, cough, chestiness, skin rashes, fits, loss of consciousness, headaches and fatigue. He provides a comprehensive service and more specialist services in paediatric gastroenterology including endoscopy, colonoscopy and allergy testing.
