I am a consultant gastroenterologist who works in a full time substantive job in the Barnsley Hospital NHS FT since the year 2000. I have a broad interest in clinical gastroenterology and liver diseases and expertise in performing a variety of upper and lower GI endoscopic procedures.
My basic medical training and graduation was in India after which I came to the UK. I have trained further in General internal Medicine and Gastroenterology & Hepatology. I completed my training in 1999 and was awarded a CCST in Gastroenterology.
During my training I have had a wide exposure to and considerable experience in managing patients with oesophageal disease, anaemia, inflammatory bowel disease, functional gut disorders including irritable bowel disease and hepatobiliary disease. I have been trained in and have expertise in performing various diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures which include upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP and capsule endoscopy. I also perform diagnostic Endoscopic Ultrasound.
Teaching and Training:
I have always been interested in teaching and training and have over the years played an important role in teaching and training students, junior doctors and nurses both medicine and gastroenterology. I am the educational and clinical supervisor for two of our junior staff.
I served as the Training Programme Director for South Yorkshire for a period of 5 years where I was responsible for the training of SpRs in Gastroenterology and Medicine. I regularly hold training sessions in endoscopy for our trainees in Barnsley. I am also regularly invited to St Georges Hospital, London and Northern General Hospital, Sheffield to participate as faculty to teach on training courses in upper and lower GI endoscopy.
I participate annually as examiner for MRCP PACES and also host the MRCP examination in Barnsley on a rotational basis. I also regularly participate in OSCE examinations for medical students.
CPD, CME and Audit:
I regularly participate in Continued Medical Education (CME) and Continued Professional Development (CPD) activities with a view towards keeping myself updated with the latest developments in my speciality to be able to provide the best care for my patients. I do this by regularly attending CME sessions, self reading, attending courses and workshops and teaching on various courses. I regularly participate in various hospital audits and also collect and audit my key performance indicators (KPI) in endoscopy.
Working with the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG):
I have been a member of the BSG since I have qualified and have regularly worked with this organisation and served on various sections of this society. I am currently on the oesophageal section and the Neurogastroenterology - motility (NGM) sections of the BSG and play a role in organising meetings and training in gastroenterology.
Over the years I have had active research interests and have regularly published papers and abstracts which I have presented in various national and international meetings. I currently have more than 25 publications and 40 abstracts in my portfolio and continue to present and publish on a regular basis. I am currently providing most of the leadership in our hospital research programme in Gastroenterology and where we currently have a portfolio of 8 open studies. I have served as PI on 6 studies some of which have closed recently.
I have a had a lot of management experience over the years. I have worked as the clinical lead in Gastroenterology for more than three years and then as the Clinical Director of the medical CBU in my hospital for 5 years. I have served on various hospital committees including the Area Prescribing Committee (APC) and am a member on the Medical advisory committee of the Spire Methley Park Hospital.
- Oesophageal disorders
Having done my research in oesophageal disease, I have an interest in looking after patients with oesophageal diseases, reflux disease (GORD) and swallowing problems.
- Bowel disease
I have interests in the management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, and functional abdominal pains, irritable bowel syndrome and alteration of bowel habit.
- Hepatobiliary disorders
Having worked in a liver unit I am also very interested in and have the expertise in the management of patients with a variety of liver diseases which include abnormal liver functions, autoimmune liver disease, viral hepatits, alcoholic liver disease and metabolic liver disorders.
- Endoscopic procedures
I am very well trained in endoscopic procedures and have expertise in performing diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy, ERCP and capsule endoscopy. In addition I also perform diagnostic Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS).
