Personal Profile

Mr Ilari works both privately and as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Orpington Hospital and the Princess Royal University Hospital (King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust) where he has been the Cataract Lead for many years and has specialised in external eye diseases, cornea, anterior segment and cataract surgery.

He has a significant experience in cataract surgery having performed few thousand operations in his career.

He has developed a specialist interest in the use of Toric intraocular lenses to treat astigmatism, a common and often under-recognised condition and he is happy to use premium intraocular lenses to reduce dependence on glasses for near and distance vision following cataract surgery.

He prides himself on maintaining up-to-date auditing of his surgical results which show consistently good outcomes and a complication rate well below the national average.

Training:

Mr Luca Ilari completed his formal training in Ophthalmology in 1995 at S.Anna University Hospital, Ferrara, Italy. This has been followed by a Research Fellowship at St.Thomas Hospital, London and two further Fellowships at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, specialising in cornea, external eye diseases and cataract/ refractive surgery.

He has authored peer-reviewed publications and has presented the results of his clinical research projects at national and international meetings. He has attended as a senior instructor in the surgical courses of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

He has developed a particular expertise on external eye diseases and advanced/complex cataract surgery including microincision surgery, topical anaesthesia and treatment of presbyopia and astigmatism.
