Personal Profile

Dr El-Omar is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the Manchester Heart Centre, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester. He graduated from St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, in 1988, and undertook his postgraduate General Medical training in London and Oxford. He then completed General Cardiology training in Birmingham, Oxford and Wales, and undertook 2 years of basic science research in diabetic cardiomyopathy as a British Heart Foundation Junior Research Fellow, leading to the award of an MD degree from University of London. He subsequently travelled to the USA to subspecialise in coronary intervention, including a 2.5 year clinical/research fellowship at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation and the New York University Medical Centre, New York. During his time there, he worked closely with leaders in the field, including Drs Greg Stone, Martin Leon and Gary Roubin.

He has published widely in clinical and basic science research and has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts, many in high-impact factor journals. His research interests are in the fields of acute coronary syndromes, fractional flow reserve, vascular closure devices and vascular biology. Dr El-Omar is currently the lead for PCI and the Acute Chest Pain Service at the Manchester Heart Centre. He is a co-director of the international Complex Cardiovascular Catheter Therapeutics Conference (C3) in the USA, and is Editor-in-Chief of Heart International.
