Personal Profile

Dr Malcolm Persey was appointed as an NHS consultant rheumatologist in 2000, based principally at the Chase Farm site of the Royal Free London NHS Trust, part of a department of 6 consultants and 4 specialist nurses.  In his more than 20 years he has helped develop the rheumatology service including a period as clinical lead and head of department.  His main Circle Health Group private practice at Kings Oak Hospital is conveniently sited in the grounds of Chase Farm Hospital. He also sees patients at the Cavell Hospital. The proximity to his NHS practice means that he can often be available at short-notice.

Dr Persey qualified from Oxford University and the Royal Free Hospitals in 1988, gaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1992 and Fellowship when he became a consultant. His training in general medicine and rheumatology included periods at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, Central Middlesex, Northwick Park and Stoke Mandeville Hospitals. He carried out research in the field of amyloidosis at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School at The Hammersmith Hospital, publishing a number of papers and obtaining an MD.

Dr Persey’s particular interests include non-surgical treatments of a variety of rheumatological problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, neck, back and shoulder pain, tennis elbow, and osteoarthritis of the hand and lower limb.

He has had extensive experience in general rheumatology, particularly osteoporosis, rheumatoid, psoriatic and osteoarthritis, gout, rheumatic diseases in pregnancy, and vasculitis.  He administers joint and soft tissue injections and nerve blocks for a variety of conditions including arthritis, gout, tennis and golfer’s elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome and tenosynovitis.  Such treatments can often be completed in a single visit.  He is able to organise and interpret the results of relevant investigations such as appropriate blood tests, X-rays, ultrasound, bone density, CT and MRI scans, facilities for which are all available at the local Circle Health Group hospitals.  He works closely with other specialities such as orthopaedics, dermatology, neurology and pain management.

He has been involved in training medical students, junior doctors and general practitioners, hosting trainees in his clinics and acting as an examiner at both medical student and postgraduate level for membership of the Royal College of Physicians.

Dr Persey also has a medicolegal practice and appears in the UK Register of Expert Witnesses.

Dr Persey is assisted in his private practice by the administrative and nursing staff at Kings Oak and Cavell Hospitals, and by his PA Debbie, who can be contacted through his website www.drmalcolmpersey.com, by telephone on 07817255337 or e-mail [email protected]. He is registered with all major medical insurers including Aviva, AXA, BUPA, Cigna and WPA.
