Personal profile

Dr Mark Nathan is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust having joined in 2017. He specialises in treating breast cancer, working not only at Guy’s Hospital but also at the Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough. As a medical oncologist he is an expert at prescribing and supervising the safe and appropriate delivery of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapy and targeted agents, each tailored to the individual patient being treated. He is also involved in the running of clinical trials and is the principal investigator on many of these trials.

Dr Nathan started his private practice in 2018, practising at both Blackheath Hospital and Chelsfield Park Hospital within the Circle Health Group network. He initiated the formation of, and now chairs, the breast cancer multi-disciplinary team meeting at Blackheath Hospital. This ensures that all breast cancer patients are discussed by a team of Circle Health Group consultants across multiple disciplines to ensure that each receives the best treatment course.

Dr Nathan regularly attends both international and national breast cancer congresses to keep on top of the latest research and developments within the field to ensure he can provide the most cutting edge and up to date treatment for his patients. He has frequently spoken at national and regional educational events to pass on his knowledge gained at these meetings to those who could not attend.

Within the NHS he arranges the yearly educational day for the South East London Accountable Cancer Network. At this meeting, the developments of the last year are discussed and guidelines agreed so that, once more, optimal treatment can be provided throughout the region.

Dr Nathan originates from London and graduated from the Bart’s and the London Medical School in 2006. He undertook his basic training in and around North East London before returning to complete his higher Oncology training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

He spent three years obtaining his PhD as an AVON clinical research fellow at the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre. His PhD focused on how breast cancer cells grow within the liver to help develop new targets to combat metastatic breast cancer. Whilst undertaking this study he also participated in breast cancer clinics at the Royal Marsden Hospital to further his knowledge.

Outside of the clinic Dr Nathan enjoys spending time with his family, taking them on bike rides and dog walks with the family labradoodle Monty. He is also an enthusiastic footballer, both playing and watching, as well as being a keen skier.
