Mr Matthew Stodell specialises in all aspects of plastic surgery with a sub-specialty interest in the surgical management of skin cancer. He holds a substantive consultant position at the Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust and is a core member of the Specialist Skin cancer Multi-Disciplinary Team (SSMDT). In addition, he is Educational Lead and Clinical Governance Lead for the plastic surgery department.
He completed his undergraduate training in 2003 and was awarded MBChB from the University of Manchester. Following his general surgical training and completion of a Masters degree in Trauma Surgery (MSc with Merit, Swansea University), he commenced his training in plastic surgery in 2007. This included rotations to the St Andrews Centre for burns, Imperial College Healthcare and Ulster Hospital in Belfast before he commenced his specialist plastic surgical training in London in 2011. During this time, Mr Stodell trained across many specialist units, including Guys & St Thomas’, Chelsea & Westminster and Barts Health before being awarded the prestigious international Poche Surgical Fellowship in the Melanoma Institute Australia, Sydney. Here he further developed his interest in surgical oncology for skin cancer and was able to engage in the unit’s avid research by writing two peer-reviewed publications in scientific medical journals and contributing to two book chapters in Melanoma Principles & Practice.
On returning to the UK and following award of FRCS (Plast), Mr Stodell undertook specialist cosmetic and aesthetic training on the Wellington Aesthetic Fellowship in London. He was awarded entry onto the GMC Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery in 2018 and commenced his Consultant position at the Royal London Hospital.
Mr Stodell is committed to continuing his professional development and maintains a keen academic interest. As Educational Lead for plastic surgery he mentors several trainees and regularly carries out work-based assessments for their surgical development. In 2020 he was invited to lecture at the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre and the Royal College of Physicians on the surgical management of melanoma. He regularly attends national and international conferences in plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery.
His surgical interests include management of all forms of skin malignancies, excision of benign skin lesions and reconstruction of skin defects from Mohs’ micrographic surgery. His cosmetic interests include body contouring (liposuction/ lipofilling), abdominoplasty (tummy-tuck) and aesthetic surgery of the breast (enlargement, reduction and uplift).
Outside work, Mr Stodell lives with his wife Charlotte, a corporate tax lawyer, their two children Madeleine and Gabriel, their red Golden Retriever, Lyla and enjoys walking in the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire.
