Mr Michael Dilkes trained at St Mary's Hospital Paddington, and qualified in 1985. After basic training he went to Harold Wood, Charing Cross, St Mary's, Bristol Royal Infirmary, St Mary's again, The Royal London, Northwick Park and finally Barts as a Consultant in 1996.
During his higher training Mr Dilkes finished his higher degree and was awarded a Master of Surgery Thesis in 2000, London University. He was then appointed Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer.
Mr Dilkes’s interests in the NHS are focused on suspected and proven cancer investigation and treatment. He uses lasers a lot, and performs about 40 major cancer resections of the head and neck area per year. Privately he is more of a general ENT surgeon, though he retains a big interest in laser surgery, this time more pointed at tonsillectomy, blocked nose, voice problems and cosmetic skin procedures.
For private referrals Mr Dilkes will see the general range of ENT conditions, and refer on those complex cases he wouldn't deal with through the NHS. His colleagues likewise refer their cases of cancer, or benign tumours such as salivary or thyroid gland swellings they have diagnosed. All cancer cases, whether private or NHS, are discussed at the Barts regional MDT, where Mr Dilkes is the ENT clinical lead.
