Dr Nap Cheung graduated from The Sheffield Medical School in 1985.  After completing his general medical training at King’s College Hospital, he went to Birmingham to start his specialist training in rheumatology.  He was awarded a three year Haywood Foundation clinical research fellowship at the Staffordshire Rheumatology Centre to investigate the relevance of specific proteins in joint inflammation and its role in common arthritis.

In 2000 Dr Cheung received a doctorate in medicine for his thesis based on his original work looking at serum pro-metalloproteinase 3 - a potential marker of synovial inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis.

On completing his specialist training at Guy’s and King’s College Hospitals, he has worked as a consultant rheumatologist at Queen Mary’s Hospital Sidcup since 1999.  He has built on existing services and developed specialist clinics such as for early inflammatory arthritis, lupus, back and shoulder pain and ‘One stop clinic for soft tissue rheumatism’.  Following local service reconfiguration, he has been an employee of King’s College Hospital Foundation NHS Trusts since 2014.  He has continued to develop his expertise in managing all forms of arthritis.

Dr Cheung has played a leading role in helping the King’s MSK deliver a high quality service for patients in Bexley.  The service consistently received high level of satisfaction from patients treated regularly.  For two consecutive years, the King’s MSK, based at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup, received the overall team of the year award for clinical excellence as voted by the patients.

He has participated in clinical research and he was involved in multi-centre clinical trials for the benefits of his patients.
He was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2004.

He has a strong interest in medical education.  He was a Royal College tutor for several years.  He is a RCP Paces examiner.  He undertakes clinical supervision of junior doctors and specialist nurses.
