Dr Nick Lagattolla General Surgery

Personal Profile

Current Practice

Mr Lagattolla specialises in minimally invasive varicose vein treatment from ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy to endovenous thermal ablation to new treatments such as Venaseal.  These minimally invasive procedures are performed on both male and female patients suffering from varicose veins, swollen and enlarged veins for both cosmetic and medical benefits. They are predominately delivered in an ambulatory care setting allowing patients to receive treatment and be able to return home a few hours post-treatment.

He also regularly deals with patients with arterial complications of the lower limbs. He is proud to have established very rapid and effective links with the vascular radiologists in Bournemouth such that all patients he deals with will have had diagnostic tests and radiological treatment as necessary within the same week.

He also operates on approximately 200 hernias each year of diverse varieties, with minimal complications. He keeps a register of all investigative procedures, endovenous treatments and operations performed, and he is regularly appraised and fully revalidated.

His private practice is held at Winterbourne Hospital in Dorchester.

Training and Appointment

Mr Nick Lagattolla trained in Nottingham and then continued all higher surgical training in London at Guy’s and St Thomas' Hospital. He was a Consultant in general, vascular and endocrine surgery for nearly 14 years at the Dorset County Hospital.  During his NHS career he had a specialist interest in lower limb ulceration, major open arterial surgery (aortic, carotid and lower limb) and all aspects of surgery of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. He pioneered two procedures: a temporary extracorporeal venous bypass to aid safe excision of massive retrosternal goitres, and thoracoscopic extraction of ectopic mediastinal parathyroid tumours. Both have been published, and he received an NHS 'Gold Award' for the latter procedure.

He has been at the forefront of many surgical developments and whilst at Dorset County Hospital he initiated a carotid endarterectomy service in conjunction with the Stroke Physicians. Prior to his appointment, this operation had not been performed locally.

He is proud to have taught many senior grade surgical trainees. He has produced many papers, case reports, presentations and posters over the years, and maintains an academic interest. His last presentation to an international meeting was last Spring in the field of Phlebology on mechano-chemical endovenous ablation. His last publication was just last year in the British Medical Journal, and he is due to publish a further clinical report this year.
