Nigel is a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital, Hampshire Hospitals since 2002/3. He was previously a Trauma & Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeon in the British Army from 1985. He trained in London, Londonderry, Belfast, Gosport, Plymouth, and Oxford, and, has done fellowship training in UK, USA & Russia. 

His principal practice areas are in Orthopaedic Trauma, all aspects of Knee surgery (including arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction, meniscal surgery, articular cartilage procedures, osteotomy and joint replacement surgery), soft tissue Shoulder surgery and Trauma related problems. He previously ran the Wessex Pelvic & Acetabular unit, is the Hampshire Hospitals lead for Trauma and the Clinical Lead for Trauma Units in the Wessex Trauma Network: having led the setting up the South Central Trauma System & Networks.

Nigel is the Immediate Past (& Founding) President of the Orthopaedic Trauma Society. He is the coordinator for Primary Trauma Care education in Uganda and a trustee of the Primary Trauma Care Foundation. He was the founder of a medical charity Link of Basingstoke with Hoima Hospital in Uganda. He has been voted the Trainer of the Year for the Wessex area, “Inspiring educator of the year” from NHS Shine Awards (twice), and, the Hippocrates Award for excellence in the field of medicine from Who’s Who. 

He has co-chaired the AO Advances courses in UK & Ireland since 2013, has previously chaired the AO Principles courses in the UK and is on faculty for the Current Concepts, Tips for Trainers and Chairmen courses. He is faculty for the Training the Trainers courses, and, runs a medical education company. He sits on a NICE committee. He helped write the original STEP course for the Royal College of Surgeons and has been a Basic Surgical Skills tutor.

He is married with four rugby playing sons.
