Personal profile

Dr Paddy Clarke is a Pain Management Consultant. He feels strongly that a holistic approach to pain is the key to success. Pain is a multifactorial problem giving rise to functional difficulty. A treatment plan combining medication, physical therapy, psychological and interventional techniques will offer improvement in most cases. Paddy has been a Consultant Pain clinician since 1998 at Gloucestershire and Worcestershire Royal Hospitals. Prior to that he was Assistant Professor of Pain Management at Stanford University in California.

Paddy performs many interventional pain procedures for many pain conditions. Conditions which he treats include back pain, neck pain, abdominal pain, chest pain, abdominal and pelvic pain, post hernia pain, neurological pain, headaches and neuropathic pain of various aetiology. Typical procedures would be facet joint injections, epidural injections and nerve injections.

He qualified in Liverpool (the home of Pain Management in the UK), developing an early interest in the treatment of pain. He subsequently trained in Birmingham and Bristol. At Stanford University he taught interventional pain techniques and was Assistant Professor at the internationally renowned Pain Centre. In Gloucestershire he established a spinal endoscopy service, one of only three in the UK. He is one of the few UK clinicians with expertise in this field.

Paddy feels that most longstanding pain conditions can be helped by a multidisciplinary approach and is happy to see anyone for an assessment and to formulate a treatment plan for that individual. He has four children and is interested in many extracurricular activities as a consequence of this!
