Dr Parijat De is a Consultant Physician in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Lipid Metabolism at City Hospital (Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust), Birmingham. He started as a Consultant Physician in January 2003 having trained as a Specialist Registrar in Wales.
He has a wide interest and expertise in all aspects of Endocrinology and Diabetes, especially in the field of Metabolic Syndrome.
He specialises in thyroid disease, ovarian (including polycystic ovarian syndrome) and adrenal dysfunction, hirsutism, calcium and electrolyte disorders, pituitary disease, osteoporosis, erectile dysfunction, menopause and infertility.
His special interest is Obesity related to all Endocrinological diseases as well as the growing problems of Type 2 diabetes. He regularly uses all the approved treatments currently available for the management of obesity in Type 2 diabetes (including Exenatide – Byetta, Victoza and Bydureon injections). His other interests in diabetes are diabetic renal disease, cardio-metabolic syndrome & Erectile dysfunction in Type 2 diabetes, adolescent and Type 1 diabetes including insulin pumps.
He is also a general physician and sees a wide variety of general internal medicine disorders and admits patients with General Medical problems (like pneumonis, cellulitis, sepsis, CCF etc) to the BMI Priory Hospital. He also has a keen interest in managing medical and diabetes problems pre and post operatively.
He has set up nurse-led diabetic renal review clinics and is involved in research and projects involving diabetic nephropathy. He has also set up various community based diabetes clinics in Birmingham, which are amongst the first in the country.
He is involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and is an MRCP examiner. He was the trust Clinical Governance Lead and has set up local protocols and guidelines in most aspects of metabolic medicine including emergencies in diabetes as well as endocrinology. He is currently the Royal College Tutor in City Hospital.
