Personal profile

Paul Coulthard is a Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The University of Manchester and Consultant and Clinical Lead for Oral Surgery at Central Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, UK. He undertakes a wide range of oral surgery procedures at the Alexandra Hospital and has a clinical special interest is bone grafting and dental implant surgery.

Professor Coulthard undertook general clinical training as a General Dental Practitioner in Manchester and Sheffield. He then undertook basic surgical training in Manchester, Carlisle and London, and also a Resident SHO post in Anaesthesia. He completed his higher specialist surgical training in Academic Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Manchester in 2000. Professor Coulthard was promoted to Senior Lecturer and Head of Department in 2000, Honorary Consultant in 2001 and Personal Chair in 2004.

Alongside surgical training, Professor Coulthard undertook research training leading to the award of an MDS in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a PhD in Neuroscience. He is an Editor with the Cochrane Collaboration Oral Health Group, is on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Surgery, an associate Editor for Oral Surgery and Senior Editor for the International Journal of the Chinese Medical Association. He has a special interest in the Control of Pain and Anxiety and Dental Implantology and has published over 130 scientific papers. The aim of this research is to advance knowledge and improve the quality of patient care by critical evaluation of clinical practice, undertaking randomised controlled trials and the preparation and dissemination of best evidence for clinicians.

Professor Coulthard is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and learning. He is an external examiner at the University of Cardiff (Dentistry MSc and Sedation MSc) and at The London (Implantology MSc). He is a member of the Higher Education Academy and published a textbook of integrated Oral and Maxillofacial Sciences ‘Master Dentistry’ in 2003 and a new edition in 2008. Professor Coulthard has introduced a number of new MSc programmes at The University of Manchester including Dental Implantology and Conscious Sedation.

He represents the Royal College of Surgeons of England on the Intercollegiate Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry. He is the Director of the regional Oral Surgery Specialty Training Committee and the Academic Representative of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialty Training Committee.
