Mr Dunning trained at Birmingham Medical School, qualifying in 1986.  His postgraduate training took place in the West Midlands and the North-East, latterly as a Specialist Registrar at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle.  He was appointed to the Specialist Register in 1998.

He was appointed as Consultant Vascular Surgeon to Lincoln County Hospital in 1999.  

He provides varicose vein treatment at BMI The Lincoln Hospital.
