Mr Basnyat originates from Kathmandu, Nepal. He studied for his medical degree at the Calcutta Medical College, University of Calcutta, India, qualifying in 1989. He became a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1995. He completed his Higher Surgical Training at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff in 2001. As a Travelling Fellow, Mr Basnyat attended Cleveland Clinic Florida and University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA in the year 2000. The Welsh Surgical Society and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow awarded the fellowship.
Mr Basnyat has undertaken audit and research throughout his career in various surgical specialties. The work has been presented in National and International Meetings and also published in Peer Review Journals.
He completed the Intercollegiate FRCS General Surgical Examination in 2001 and was appointed to the Consultant Surgeon post with interest in Colorectal Surgery in September 2001. Over the last 15 years he has developed and established Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery, Laparoscopic Incisional and Inguinal Hernias, Surgery for Complex Grade III & IV Incisional Hernias with Component Separation, Day Case Laparoscopic Cholecystectomies, Stapled Haemorrhoidopexy for Prolapsing Haemorroids, Trans Anal Minimum Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) for Rectal Polyps and early Rectal Cancers.
Mr Basnyat also has interest in the diagnostic pathway for colorectal symptoms (rectal bleeding, altered bowel habits, abdominal pain, Iron deficiency anemia). As a consultant surgeon, he has maintained a very high standards set by the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) and Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy (JAG), he has extensively performed both diagnostic and therapeutic, Sigmoidoscopies and Colonoscopies, since 2002.
