Dr Cooney is a consultant in Gastroenterology and General Medicine specialising in diseases of the gut, pancreas and liver.
She is experienced in seeing patients with altered bowel habits, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, heartburn, jaundice and anaemia.
At Oxford University she completed her PhD (D.Phil) on Inflammatory bowel disease, focussing in particular on Crohns disease. And as a consultant her interests have expanded to include coeliac disease, irritable syndrome and nutritional issues and she has gained wide experience in the management of these problems. Dr Cooney studied medicine in University College Dublin and became interested in gastroenterology whilst working at the Mayo clinic Rochester. Dr Cooney returned to Dublin to complete her specialty training.
She then moved to the UK to pursue her research interests at Oxford and has since taken up her consultant post here. Dr Cooney continues to pursue her research interests both in the genetics and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and the management of nutritional issues.
