Dr Ariyaratnam then worked as a Registrar in Wolverhamptom and Ormskirk before spending two years working as a Staff Rheumatologist at Wrightington Hospital and another two years as a Senior Regsitrar at a group of hospital in Sheffield.
In 1995, Dr Ariyaratnam too a post as a Consultant in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation in the North West before retiring from the NHS in 2016. He continues to practice at The Beardwood Hospital as also works part time as a Consultant Rheumatologist at East Lancashire Hospital.
In addition to his rheumatology practice Dr Ariyaratnam trains postgraduates in his NHS practice at East Lancashire Hospital NHS Trust. He is also an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians of London.
Dr Ariyaratnam is married to a Consultant Paediatrician and has two children who are both NHS Doctors. He is a keen cricketer and played cricket for school and University teams as well at Leyland Cricket Club. Other hobbies include walking, Sri Lankan cooking and listening to music.
