Personal Profile

Mr Rakesh Kucheria is an expert in joint replacement surgery, specialising in lower limb anthroplasty including hip replacements, unicondylar knee replacements, revision hip and total knee replacements and robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement surgery. He performs more than 350 hip and knee replacements each year, putting him in the top percent of UK surgeons.

For the last 18 years Mr Kucheria has been working at Heatherwood and Wexham Park hospitals, now part of Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. Recognised by the trust with clinical excellence awards, Mr Kucheria was the lead clinician in his department.

Mr Kucheria qualified in 1989, training at Royal London Hospital and the world renowned Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore. As well as joint replacement surgery, Mr Kucheria has extensive experience of endoprosthetic reconstruction for failed anthroplasty, pathological fractures and hip and knee revision procedures for loose or infected joints. Mr Kucheria also leads the Enhanced Recovery Programme in both his NHS and private practices, which is a revolutionary pathway for joint replacements designed to minimise post-operative pain and maximise early mobility of the joint.

More recently, Mr Kucheria has been working with computer-assisted surgery and navigated hip and knee replacements and this year celebrated his 100th surgery using the using the Mako® Robotic arm. Mr Kucheria commented “The Mako® robotic arm has revolutionised the way joint replacements are performed at BMI The Princess Margaret Hospital. Mako® allows us to perform joint replacements with more accuracy than with conventional techniques, as each surgical plan is based on a patient's individual and specific diagnosis and anatomy. Patients undergoing Mako®-assisted joint replacements have less pain and better early function post-operatively.”

One of Mr Kucheria’s patients had robotic assisted total hip replacement surgery and was back playing golf six weeks after surgery. He said, “Surgery could not have gone better. It's the best thing I've ever had done. If I'd known then what I know now, I would have had this surgery ten years ago. Mr Kucheria has perfectly extended my leg, so both legs are the same length and it feels great. Mr Kucheria is a lovely man and I have already recommended him to some of my friends.” For more detail on Robin’s story click here.
