Dr Boulton was the clinical service lead for gastroenterology at University Hospital Birmingham and is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer in the University of Birmingham. As well as looking after adult patients he has helped developed a transition service for adolescent patients with gastrointestinal disease moving from Birmingham Children’s Hospital to UHB with his colleague Dr Kate Kane. He has written a textbook on Gastroenterology for GPs and junior doctors in training.
He is widely experienced in gastrointestinal endoscopy including Gastroscopy, Colonoscopy including complex polypectomy and Endoscopic Ultrasound.
In the course of his busy day to day NHS practice and in Private Practice Dr Boulton has developed expertise in dealing with patients with peptic ulcers and dyspepsia (indigestion), coeliac disease and other causes of malabsorption, the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other functional gastrointestinal disease, the inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. He sees patients with symptoms of dyspepsia, heartburn, altered bowel habit such as diarrhoea and constipation, rectal bleeding, weight loss, and anaemia. He also deals with the endoscopic management of patients with cancers of the gastrointestinal tract such as cancer of the oesophagus, stomach or colon (large bowel).
Ralph is married and when not working enjoys outdoor pursuits.
