Personal profile

Mr Bates graduated from London University in 1977 and began his ophthalmic training in Moorfields and Whipps Cross Hospitals, before starting sub-specialist training at Liverpool, and subsequently Birmingham. He returned to St. Paul’s Liverpool and the University of Liverpool as an honorary lecturer to complete a vitreoretinal fellowship in 1991. 

Mr Bates was appointed consultant at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury and Milton Keynes Hospital in 1992.  He set up the vitreoretinal service at Milton Keynes together with the day case cataract surgery service and from 2008 set up the macular degeneration service at Milton Keynes.
