Richard Hindley is one of a small number of urological surgeons experienced in prostate HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) treatment for localised prostate cancer.
To date he has treated over 100 patients over the last five years. More recently, since his involvement with the focal HIFU trial he has gained further experience at targeting the cancerous areas within the prostate gland and leaving the rest of the gland untouched. This is called focal therapy and is a possible treatment option for men keen to have treatment but wishing to avoid the side-effects of the conventional options such as radiotherapy and surgery.
The one year results of this exciting trial were published this week in Lancet Oncology with the result demonstrating that no men developed incontinence and only 1 in 10 men developed erection problems. Furthermore, 95% of the men treated are free of clinically significant prostate cancer at the time of publication.
In addition to his expertise in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment, Richard is also a leading consultant in treating BPH and LUTs with minimally invasive techniques including Greenlight laser, Urolift and Rezum
(a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)). Mr Hindley was the first to perform this procedure in the UK. He says, “Rezum is an exciting new minimally invasive treatment option for men looking to avoid the side-effects associated with some of the more conventional treatments such as TURP.”
Mr Hindley also specialises in kidney care covering both kidney stones and kidney cancer.
