I qualified MB ChB University of Bristol 1972. I obtained FRCS (England) 1977. I underwent comprehensive training in knee surgery both in the UK and abroad. I was Clinical Fellow in Knee Surgery, Department of Orthopaedics, University of Toronto, Canada 1980 to 1981. I was Senior Registrar, Professorial Unit, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore 1983. I was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with an interest in knee surgery to Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals 1983.
In 1984 I was the British Orthopaedic Association European Travelling Fellow visiting knee surgery centres in France and Sweden. I was Educational Secretary of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee 1995 to 1998, Honorary Secretary 1999 to 2002 and President 2004 to 2006. I was chairman of the committee that produced the Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Best Practice document for the British Orthopaedic Association in 2001 (updated 2009). I have lectured in knee surgery in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Equador, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Peru, Portugal and Singapore and have carried out knee surgery in Egypt. I was a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery from 1999 to 2006 and continue to review articles on knee surgery for the journal.
To date I have reviewed over 550 articles which has kept me up to date with current practice. I also review articles for The Knee journal (over 150) and The Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. I was a member of the Council of the British Orthopaedic Association 1999 to 2001 and Honorary Secretary 2002 to 2004. I remain active in clinical knee surgery both in the NHS and in private practice.
Since 1994 I have carried out 1065 anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions and since the commencement of the National Joint Registry in 2003 705 knee replacements have been carried out under my care.
