Personal profile

Dr Puri graduated from Manchester in 1986 and trained in Cardiology as British Heart Foundation Fellow at the Hammersmith Hospital followed by training at the Cardiothoracic centre in Liverpool (now Liverpool Heart and Chest). He has been a Consultant Cardiologist and Physician since 1999 at Tameside General Hospital.

He works as a General Cardiologist seeing and treating patients with the full range of Cardiology Conditions (angina, heart attacks, atrial fibrillation, cardiac rhythm problems, heart failure, syncope, breathlessness, pulmonary hypertension, valve disease, cardiomyopathies etc.). 

Dr Puri is dually accredited in General Medicine and Cardiology and performs acute medical on call seeing unselected medical patients on a regular basis including acute Cardiology emergencies such as myocardial infarction and patients with cardiac rhythm disturbance first hand in the Emergency Department. 

He is a heart failure specialist and has published in high profile/citation index journals such as Circulation in the past and has expertise in the effects of heart failure on the respiratory physiology in cardiac disease. In addition he has been an invited speaker at the British Society for Heart Failure and the equivalent European Cardiac Society and  has delivered lectures on "The role of pulmonary vasculature / congestion in the functional limitation in chronic heart failure" as well as "The Determinants of Symptoms in Heart Failure".

Dr Puri is an educational and clinical supervisor for trainee doctors and regularly is involved in their teaching, training and assessment and also regularly does teaching and training sessions with colleagues in primary care on wide range of Cardiology subjects (e.g. heart failure, atrial fibrillation, syncope, ischaemic heart disease etc.). 

He is a respected clinical leader and has held multiple leadership roles within the NHS. Currently he is the Clinical Director for Adult Medicine having managerial responsibility over all Medical Specialties including Acute Medicine.
