Professional Profile

Dr Mittal is an established and esteemed Consultant Haematologist, based at Northampton General Hospital since 2008. In 2009 he set up a private practice at Three Shires Hospital and, currently, he is the only Consultant Haematologist in Northamptonshire who offers a private practice.

He sees and treats patients for a large variety of conditions within general haematology and malignant haematology. However, his main area of interest is in lymphoma.

Dr Mittal qualified as a Doctor at Calcutta University, India in 1996 and completed his specialist Haematology training in Aberdeen. He spent two years doing research in immunobiology of lymphoma, and his research work was published in the prestigious journal ‘Blood’.

Dr Mittal has more than twenty publications in peer-reviewed journals and has written chapters in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical textbooks. He has held the role of either Principal Investigator (locally) or Co-Investigator for multiple national haematology trials, including commercial studies. He is also an examiner for the Royal college of Pathologists (FRCPath exam) and was previously an MRCP examiner.

Presently, Dr Mittal holds pivotal roles as the Lymphoma Lead, Morbidity and Mortality Lead, and Educational Lead for the Haematology Department at Northampton General Hospital. He serves as an appraiser and Educational and Clinical Supervisor for trainees, along with being a core member of the Northamptonshire Haematology MDT.

Previously he has taken multiple leadership roles including Head of Service in the Department, Cancer drug fund panel member, Haemoglobinopathy Lead, CPD advisor and College Tutor for the Royal College of Pathologists.

Dr Mittal offers good availability and is happy to see patients with any blood disorder. He will be able to initiate the appropriate investigations and guide his patient in the right direction. Those wanting to see him are advised that he always requires a referral from the GP prior to seeing patients in the clinic. All referrals are triaged by Dr Mittal himself to ensure that he can help and provide the required treatment. He is also very happy to see patients for a second opinion.

Both self-funding and insured patients can book in to see Dr Mittal in one of his weekly clinics at Three Shires Hospital. He sees patients from across Northamptonshire, including Northampton, Kettering, Milton Keynes and Bedford. He has even had bookings from people living as far as Warwick. He can speak multiple languages fluently including English, Marwari, Hindi, Nepali, Bengali, and Urdu. And he has basic-level skills in speaking Gujarati and Punjabi.

If you book in to see Dr Mittal, you will benefit from his person-centred approach to care. He takes great pride in providing the best possible experience for his patients, ensuring they get seen quickly and are given the most appropriate treatment, in the most appropriate way. His patient feedback is a testament to the level of service his patients receive.

Good Doctor: “[He is] the best if it wasn’t for him I would have died with his quick choices so lovely and friendly”

Outside of his Consultancy work and clinical commitments, Dr Mittal likes to keep fit, and he is a hugely family-orientated man, who likes to spend his weekends out and about with his children.
