Personal Profile

Sally Ameen MBBS, BSC, FRCOphth is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at London’s Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

After graduating from both St Andrew’s University in Scotland and St George’s University in London, Sally Ameen completed her ophthalmic training in the north Thames London deanery, and rotated through Moorfields Hospital as well as the Western Eye hospital.

Her interest in education dates back to her undergraduate career, where she took every opportunity to formally expand her teaching experience. During her training, Miss Ameen completed an MSC in clinical education and has been a faculty member on many national and international courses.  This passion for education has continued into her consultant post, where she held the position of college tutor for over 3 years. She is also the Secretary for the Ophthalmic division of the Royal Society of medicine and continues to be involved in both chairing and organising educational events.

In order to remain being an active member of the multidisciplinary team, Miss Ameen is currently the Quality and Safety Lead at the Western Eye hospital. The role demonstrates her commitment to ensure she is always at the forefront of best practice medicine.

Ms Sally Ameen is an expert in the management of all forms of glaucoma and a specialist eye surgeon that performs glaucoma surgery including trabeculectomy, Baerveldt and Ahmed drainage tube surgery, laser peripheral iridotomy, MIGS drainage surgery, and selective laser trabeculoplasty. She is also highly trained in complex cataract surgery and emergency ophthalmology.

The most common surgery that Ms Ameen performs in practice is minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS).

The procedure takes around five minutes and is done under local anaesthetic. It can be done as a standalone surgery or in combination with cataract surgery. MIGS can be used in patients with open angle glaucoma who are not suitable for eye drops or no longer wish to use them.

Ms Ameen also performs the latest Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT). This uses a laser to control pressure in the eye and remove the need for medication or drops. It’s very safe, effective and both eyes can be treated in the same visit.

Her interest in education dates back to her undergraduate career, where she took every opportunity to formally expand her teaching experience. During her training, Sally completed an MSC in clinical education and has been a faculty member on many national and international courses. This passion for education has continued into her consultant post, where she now holds the position of college tutor.

Ms Ameen finds her job rewarding as she has ongoing involvement in the lives of her patients as she takes them on a journey. She will always do everything in her power to save their sight.
