Mr Sanjay Rajpal is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals based at Royal Hallamshire Hospital with his private practice at BMI Thornbury hospital, Sheffield.
Sanjay completed his graduation and general surgical training at TN Dr MGR Medical University, Chennai, India. He was proud to be awarded the University Gold medal for his performance in the surgical training programme. Sanjay undertook his urology training in the United Kingdom. This included junior doctor placements in Surrey, Stoke-on-Trent, Stockport and a period of clinical research (evaluating the role of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound- HIFU for the treatment of Prostate cancer) at Stockport followed by higher surgical training in Yorkshire region. He gained further specialist experience by undertaking an overseas visiting fellowship at Nadiad, India under Dr Mahesh Desai, at one of the high volumes and pioneering urinary stones treatment centre in the World. A highlight of his training period was being awarded as Best Junior Doctor for his cohort in Stockport, this was a reflection of Sanjay’s work ethic, professionalism and team working skills, something which he has continued to sustain and foster throughout his career.
Sanjay practices all aspects of general and diagnostic urology. His subspeciality interests include the management of urinary tract stone disease (kidney, ureteric and bladder stones) and laser prostatectomy for urinary symptoms and retention (blockage) due to enlargement of the prostate. He has successfully implemented day case laser prostatectomy using Greenlight laser at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and is now the service development lead for the introduction of minimally invasive surgical treatments (Rezum, UroLift, Prostate artery embolization) in men with urinary symptoms due to an enlarged prostate.
He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield and a keen educator and trainer. As a recognition of his teaching skills, he is an invited faculty and course lead for national and regional courses on stone disease, prostate (BPH) surgery and core urological skills. Sanjay is delighted to be associated with the National Urology simulation Bootcamp since its inception in 2015. He has been recognised as a proctor for Greenlight laser prostatectomy and is involved in mentoring not only colleagues within his unit but also regionally and nationally.
Sanjay is married and blessed with 2 boys. A recent addition to the family- a pet Labrador has been a big positive influence for them. In his other spare time, Sanjay enjoys playing badminton, countryside walks and follows cricket.
