Personal Profile

Dr. Shanthi Paramothayan is a Consultant Physician in Respiratory and General Medicine. She qualified from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, University of London in 1993 with several academic prizes and a Distinction in Medicine. She trained at several leading hospitals in London, including the Royal Brompton Hospital and St. George’s Hospital and passed her MRCP at first attempt in 1996. She has been a Consultant since 2001.

Dr. Paramothayan offers an excellent service to her patients. She is an excellent diagnostician and works closely with her patients, putting their needs first. She has had excellent reviews from her patients.

Dr. Paramothayan is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, and an elected Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is member of the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME), a member of British Thoracic Society (BTS) and a member of the British Medical Association (BMA).

She currently works as a Consultant in Medway Maritime NHS Trust where she looks after inpatients and sees patients in the outpatient clinic.

Dr. Paramothayan has expertise in the diagnosis and management of all respiratory problems. This includes:

Dr. Paramothayan has an Honours degree in Medical Biochemistry and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. She has done a lot of research, including several Cochrane Systematic Reviews and has several publications.

Dr. Paramothayan was commissioned to write a Textbook entitled “Essential Respiratory Medicine” (Wiley Blackwells) which was published in 2018. This textbook is aimed at medical students, junior doctors, non-respiratory specialists, specialist nurses and advanced nurse practitioners.

D. Paramothayan has a Masters degree in Medical Education and has been involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education for several years. She has just been appointed Senior Lecturer at Kent and Medway Medical School. She is a PACES examiner for the Royal College of Physicians. She was previously Honorary Senior Lecturer at St. George’s Medical School, Foundation Training Programme Director, Director of Medical Education, Associate Medical Director for Education and Associate Dean for Health Education England.

Dr. Paramothayan has a Masters in Medical Law and undertakes medico-legal work. She is a Fellow of the Faculty of Expert Witnesses.
