Dr Shri Pathmakanthan qualified as a doctor at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1991. He proceeded to undergo his initial hospital based training in Dublin completing his Membership of the Royal College of Physicians Examinations in 1994. An interest in all things gastrointestinal lead him to three years as a gastroenterology registrar in Dublin followed by a post graduate Doctorial Thesis in “Probiotics and Inflammation” at the University of Nottingham. The final part of his gastroenterology training was undertaken in Sheffield culminating in an appointment as Consultant Gastroenterologist at the University Hospital Birmingham in May 2002.

At this busy hospital, he encounters and cares for a variety of gastrointestinal and liver disease in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. He is highly experienced in upper  and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy and has a particular passion for ERCP; a specialised endoscopic procedure concerned with internal manipulation of the common bile duct leading to successful extraction of gall stones and relief of blockages in this system.
