Mr Kamath is an experienced consultant orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty interest in hip and knee surgery. He graduated from the reputed Karnatak University, Dharwar, India in 1995. He successfully completed his postgraduate training in Trauma and Orthopaedics in Bangalore medical College in 1999 under the able guidance of Prof J K Reddy. He was awarded with the title MS (trauma and orthopaedics) having successfully completed and submitted his dissertation to Bangalore University, Bangalore. Mr Kamath moved to the UK to improve his knowledge and skills in Orthopaedics and completed his basic surgical training in Derby and Nottingham. During this time he worked in the spinal and neurosurgical unit in Nottingham and successfully completed primary FRCS in surgery in general in Glasgow as well as in Edinburgh.

Mr Kamath completed his higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics in the Mersey Deanery in 2009. Mr Kamath completed the SAC recognised lower limb arthroplasty Fellowship in Portsmouth where he had extensive exposure to primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery. He also worked as senior registrar at the Centre of Excellence, Wrightington Hospital in lower limb arthroplasty unit before joining the East Lancashire Hospitals as a full-time consultant in 2009. He has been working there since developing his practice in the hip and knee surgery. During this time he has visited world-renowned institutes to improve his knowledge and skills on varied aspects of subspecialty hip and knee related surgery.

Mr Kamath is a keen believer in joint preserving procedures which helps delay more invasive procedures like joint replacement whenever possible. Consequently he offers a comprehensive choice of procedures including cartilage preservation surgery, hamstring ACL reconstruction surgery, corrective osteotomy procedures including high tibial and distal femoral osteotomy, partial medial and lateral uni-condylar knee replacement and selective patello femoral knee replacement surgery. Mr Kamath likes to keep up-to-date with evolving technology and has visited Mako robotic unit in New Jersey, USA to gain experience in robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery. He also offers customised knee replacement for complex cases where conventional joint replacement cannot be performed for technical reasons. He is one amongst the high-volume hip and knee replacement surgeon in the North West as noted in the UK joint registry with complication rates well below the UK national average.

Mr Kamath is actively involved in the training of junior doctors at Royal Blackburn hospital. He is the Department lead in East Lancashire Trust for advancing quality programme which is a pioneering work in the North West region to improve the quality of patient care. He is also the Trauma and Orthopaedics Governance lead for ELHT and always puts patient’s best interest first in his clinical practice. Mr Kamath believes and practices enhanced recovery to ensure patient’s are mobile and safe for discharge home as early as possible. Several studies have shown that the use of tranexamic acid significantly reduces blood loss, wound related problems and the need for blood transfusion post surgery. Mr Kamath has been amongst the first few to implement this in his elective hip and knee surgery practice. Mr Kamath has several peer-reviewed publications and has delivered presentations both nationally and internationally on different aspects of trauma and orthopaedics.

In his spare time Mr Kamath likes spending time with his family and enjoys swimming, cycling and playing badminton.

With more than 10 years experience as a consultant in the North West, Mr Kamath offers personal and attentive care for all his patients with robust follow-up. He discusses all available treatment options with his patients and let them make the informed choice based on their individual circumstances. This approach offers open and honest conversation and ensures a high degree of success and patient satisfaction.
