Stephen Brennan is a consultant upper GI and general surgeon with a special interest in laparoscopic surgery.  He is an expert in laparoscopic surgery and particularly removing gall bladders with keyhole surgery.  He has been a consultant general surgeon for 10 years and has an NHS base at Croydon University Hospital.  He is the senior and most experienced upper GI surgeon at Croydon University Hospital having performed the first laparoscopic Heller’s cardio myotomy and laparoscopic splenectomy at the hospital.  He performs laparoscopic fundoplication (anti reflux) surgery independently and performs approximately 150 laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal) per year. He repairs all kinds of abdominal wall hernia Including the component separation technique.

He is originally from Dublin having trained in Scotland with also brief periods in Melbourne and South Africa for additional training.  He worked at the world renowned centre of excellence at the MATTU Centre at Guildford.  Mr Brennan’s previous roles include MRCS examination tutor with the Royal College of Surgeons and is a fully trained advanced trauma life support instructor.  His particular area of expertise is in keyhole removal of gall bladders for which he has a very low complication rate with a less than 1% conversion rate to open procedure and a 0% bile duct injury rate.

In a recent consultant appraisal his colleagues have described him thus “Stephen is a very approachable and excellent laparoscopic surgeon”.  “Great colleague”. “One of the very best general surgeons and clinicians I have seen and worked with. I would let him operate on myself and my family”.

Outside of work Mr Brennan has a wide range of skills including holding a private pilot’s licence, he has a black belt in American Kenpo karate, has completed the London triathlon and is currently training for an Iron Man competition.  In his spare time he shares these hobbies with his young daughter Caitlin.
