Dr Tim Jenkinson trained in Leeds before joining the Royal Air Force in 1983 where he completed his general practitioner vocational training. He developed a keen interest in musculoskeletal medicine. His time as a registrar was split between rheumatology services at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases (RNHRD), rehabilitation services at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London and the Defence Services Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court.
In 1995, Dr Jenkinson returned full-time to the RNHRD as Consultant in Rheumatology & Sports and Exercise Medicine. He was previously a Senior Lecturer and Director of Studies for the MSc in Sports & Exercise Medicine at The University of Bath. He is also Senior Medical Adviser (honorary) to the Football Association and Medical Officer for Bristol Rovers Football Club. Dr Jenkinson became Medical Director of the RNRHD in 2007.
