Personal Profile

Mr Sung is a Consultant Eye Surgeon with a special interest in managing complex Glaucoma and Cataract conditions. He is a full-time consultant at Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, a University of Birmingham teaching eye unit at City Hospital, Dudley Road, Birmingham.

It is also one of the biggest eye hospitals in the UK. He is also a Clinical Trial Scholar at the Birmingham Clinical Trial Unit at the University of Birmingham. He graduated from the University of Wales, Cardiff, UK in 1993. He underwent the Specialist Registrar training programme at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham.

He undertook prestigious Glaucoma Fellowships at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London before being appointed to his current consultant position in 2004. He was awarded an MSc degree in Medical Leadership from the University of Warwick in 2013.

He served as the Lead Clinician for the Glaucoma Service at Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre between 2007 and 2012. He served as the Clinical Director for Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre from 2012-2014 and then the Group Director for Surgery B from 2014-2016.

He provides a supra-regional tertiary referral service for complex glaucoma including the renowned Childhood Glaucoma Service.  He developed a safe surgery system for tube-shunt implant surgery and published favourable results in the medical literature. He is a pioneer in angle-closure glaucoma surgeries introduced the goniosynechialysis procedure for angle closure in the UK.

He is also a specialist in the Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgeries (MIGS) including the endoscopic cycloablation procedure, iStent microscopic trabecular bypass surgery, XEN gel-tube implant and the new Gonioscoptic Assisted Transluminal Trabeculotomy (GATT) procedure. These procedures can be performed with cataract surgery to enhance eye pressure control after the operation.

He run an active research programme and have supervised post-graduate PhD and MD research projects.  His research portfolio including surgical outcome in childhood glaucoma, anterior segment imaging for angle-closure, the outcome of angle-closure surgeries and the tube-shunt implant surgery for uveitis related glaucoma.

He is an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and co-founder and serving co-secretary for the UK Paediatric Glaucoma Society. He is an NHS Bronze National Clinical Excellent Award holder.
