Personal profile

Miss Deans is a hand and wrist surgery consultant at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust in Yorkshire. In 2004, she qualified from the University of Leicester, then completed both her membership (MRCS, 2007) and fellowship (FRCS, 2013) exams with the Royal College of Surgeons, and an MSc (2011) in orthopaedic surgery.

In 2012, she was awarded an educational bursary award by The Royal College of Surgeons of England. In 2014-15, she completed one of 11 nationally competitive advanced training programmes in hand and wrist surgery fellowships in Manchester. These are recognised by the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) as the best hand surgery training programmes. She worked for three highly experienced hand and wrist surgery consultants, one of whom was the president of the BSSH at that time.

She provides a specialist service in hand and wrist surgery, and practice dedicated hand and wrist surgery in my NHS consultant post. This is in addition to her on calls in general orthopaedics.

Miss Deans regularly attends the BSSH scientific meetings and remain committed and active with research in hand and wrist surgery techniques. Moreover, her last systematic review of the evidence for surgical treatment of STT joint wrist arthritis was published in The Journal of Hand Surgery (AP volume). She presented her audit work comparing the hand trauma service with the BSSH guidelines at the at the BSSH scientific meeeting.

As she feels it is important to remain an active teacher, she also does numerous teaching and assessment sessions with trainee surgeons on hand and wrist surgery in several Yorkshire hospitals.
