Dr Devalia is a Lead Consultant Haematologist in General and Laboratory Haematology at Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow. He trained in haematology at University College Hospital, London, and in Nottingham Hospitals. Previously, he has been a consultant haematologist in Wales for twenty years, with considerable ‘coal-face’ experience in all aspects of haematology.
Clinically, he has experience in assessment and treatment of all types of anaemia, varying from nutritional (due to vegetarianism), ethnic (haemoglobinopathies), chronic disease, age-related, and related to malignancy. Haemochromatosis, a condition of iron overload, is also a particular interest.
His research interests centre on disorders of iron and vitamin B12. He has published internationally on molecular and clinical aspects of iron disorders and vitamin B12. The British Society for Haematology guidelines on cobalamin (vitamin B12) and folate disorders were published with Dr Devalia as its lead author.
Other professional roles in the past include ‘peer view’ laboratory inspector for Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA), advisor for antenatal screening for haemoglobinopathies in Wales, and secretary of the general haematology task force of the British Society for Haematology.
