Personal Profile

My name is  Dr Virginia Hill. I was Consultant Dermatologist and Lead for Paediatric Dermatology for The Royal Free London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust until October 2017 when I left to concentrate on private medicine.  I studied medicine at Guy’s Hospital Medical School, now part of King’s College London. I initially trained as a general practitioner on a formal vocational training scheme in Bromley/Farmborough in Kent. I spent 2 ½ years as a general practitioner and gained a number of qualifications, including Membership of Royal College of General Practitioners and a Diploma in Child Health.

I then made a decision to change to dermatology, which meant going back to hospital medicine for two years to gain membership to the Royal College of Physicians.  Following this, I was fortunate to gain Senior House Office post at St John’s Dermatology Centre in St Thomas’ Hospital for a year and then a part-time post as a Specialist Registrar in Dermatology at St George’s Hospital, London and Frimley Park in Surrey.  I gained my Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in 2000 and then spent a post-CCST year as a Specialist Registrar in Paediatric Dermatology at Great Ormond Street Hospital.  I was subsequently appointed as a Consultant in Paediatric Dermatology at Birmingham Children’s Hospital in 2003.  I returned to the London area in 2005 and was appointed to the post at Barnet and Chase Farm Hospital, now The Royal Free Hospitalin 2007, after doing a locum role there for a year.  I was Clinical Lead for Dermatology for two years.

I built up the NHS Paediatric Dermatology Services over a wide area of North London and Hertfordshire during my time in post.  I am one of the few dermatologists to gain an MSc in Allergy from Imperial College, London, which I completed in 2012. This included a thesis on Immunotherapy in Childhood Atopic Eczema.

I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, as well as a member of the British Association of Dermatology, The Royal Society of Medicine and British Medical Association. I have over 50 publications.  I was short-listed for the Clinician of the Year Award at The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust in 2016/17.

In the past, I have regularly taught visiting doctors, medical students, general practitioners, hospital doctors and nurses in clinic and have significant experience in supervising dermatology trainees.

My main special area as a private dermatologist is in paediatric dermatology as this is where my expertise lies.  I am particularly interested in atopic eczema and allergies.  I also see adults and treat the following conditions:

  • Children – all problems
  • Eczema/allergies
  • Female anogenital problems
  • Acne
  • Contact Dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Urticaria
  • Medical dermatology

I do not treat lumps and bumps and do not give cosmetic advice. Surgical procedures are only undertaken for diagnostic purposes.
