Dr Waqar Ahmed's main training, from house officer to research fellow, was in Liverpool teaching hospitals. He also had experience of working in St Loius Missouri USA.
He was appointed on a substantive consultant gastroenterologist post at Gwynedd Hospital, Bangor North Wales, and spent 20 years in North Wales as a consultant gastroenterologist. He was instrumental in developing the gastroenterology and endoscopy unit in Bangor.
During his time in Wales, Dr Ahmed was the Royal College Regional Advisor for Wales for four years. He is also a Royal College PACES examiner.
In May 2017 he moved to Manchester for family reasons and started on a substantive consultant post at the Pennine Trust. There he leads the Hepato-Pancreatico Biliary Services. At an international level he has established hands colonoscopy and ERCP courses in Pakistan on a voluntary basis.
