Personal Profile

Dr William McAllister is an experienced Consultant in Respiratory Medicine, with a broad knowledge in the management of a variety of chest conditions including chronic cough, breathlessness, lung allergies, asthma, recurrent chest infections, lung cancer and auto-immune conditions.

Training and Appointment

Dr McAllister qualified at Guy’s Hospital, University of London in 1973. He undertook his House jobs and senior house office (SHO) jobs, as well as his General Medical Registrar training at Guy’s Hospital. He then moved to the Royal Brompton Hospital where he studied for an MD in the Pharmacology department on the pharmacokinetics of prednisolone. Following two years of research, Dr McAllister then trained as a Senior Registrar in Respiratory Medicine for three and a half years at Royal Brompton Hospital, which is the largest specialist heart and lung medical centre in the United Kingdom.  It’s currently managed by Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust.


Dr McAllister went on to become a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at The Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford in 1983.

Dr McAllister has led an innovative, prize-winning respiratory team at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.  The Respiratory Department runs an extensive pulmonary rehabilitation programme.  There is comprehensive care for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD) who are cared for in their own homes and also a specialist oxygen clinic.  The team runs a sleep service and a non-invasive CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) and BIPAP (bi level positive airway pressure) ventilation service. In addition, Dr McAllister has supported numerous training programmes for medical students at the Royal Surrey, where he has been Lead Clinical Supervisor.

Current Practice

Dr McAllister works closely with the Thoracic Surgery team at St George’s, Tooting as well as with the regional cancer unit at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guilford.  He is a member of the Snoring and Sleep Clinic in Guildford, where he works with a team of related specialists to diagnose and resolve sleep problems and snoring issues in patients.

 

Long Covid Clinic

Dr McAllister is one of the multi-disciplinary team of specialists forming the recently established Long Covid Clinic at Mount Alvernia Hospital.  It was launched in March 2021 to support and treat patients suffering with the long-term effects of Covid-19 and is unique in offering each patient a bespoke treatment package, with input from a variety of specialists, who will meet on a monthly basis to review patient progress.
