Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) Surgery (also known as Natural Lens Replacement) involves replacing the natural lens with an intraocular lens (IOL) and is performed mainly to reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses.

If you are over 40 years of age and have a glasses prescription higher than the normal range for laser eye surgery, you are likely to be suitable for RLE.

It is becoming an increasingly popular treatment choice for patients as it eliminates the need for cataract surgery in later life and can also be combined with laser eye surgery in suitable patients to extend the range of astigmatism treatment or fine-tune the focus outcome.

We provide a range of lenses for patients undergoing refractive lens exchange surgery that aim to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses, as well as correcting any pre-existing astigmatism:

  • Monofocal - for patients who have issues with one vision and are most commonly used to correct distance sight.
  • Multifocal - aims to correct the vision on all sight distances
  • Lens SurgeryToric - deals specifically with the correction of astigmatism (distorted or blurred vision at all distances). The toric option is also available in both monofocal and multifocal ranges.
