When your car gets over three years old you take it to the garage for a service and annual MOT. It’s a simple precaution to help detect if something has worn out and is likely to fail in the near future so you can continue driving safely. It makes sense to do this to keep your car working properly, so why don’t we automatically take the same approach with our bodies?
Just like an MOT for your body, a health assessment is a series of tests and checks to see what your current state of health is, and to help identify possible health issues in the future. It puts control back into your hands by enabling you to either get swift treatment if there is something wrong, or the right advice on what you can do to stay fit and well for longer.
Who should have a health assessment?
Maybe you worry about who will take care of your business or what would happen to your job if you became ill? Or maybe you’re thinking about the impact illness could have on your family life or whether you’re fit enough to train for a marathon? Health assessments are aimed at women of all ages who want to take a proactive approach to their health and not just sit back and wait for something to happen. To find out more, watch Leonie’s story as she discusses what made her decide to have a health assessment.
What sort of health assessment should I have?
BMI Healthcare offer a range of health assessments so you can choose the one that is right for you from: Advanced, Advanced Plus, Essentials and Select. For women, we can include additional screening and advice for breast cancer and cervical cancer. Assessments can also be tailored to your specific concerns, so you can find out what matters to you. As well as tests measuring things like blood pressure and cholesterol, we also offer ECG tests to help you to understand your body’s ability to cope with exercise, which can be useful if you’re considering taking up a new sport. If any tests are not clinically appropriate for you, your doctor will advise you.
I don’t need a health assessment because I feel fine
Just because you feel okay doesn’t mean you should ignore your health. Health assessments are not just about finding out if anything is wrong right now and improving your chances of successful early treatment. We also use the test results to predict potential health issues in the future, so you can take steps to improve those areas and carry on feeling fine for longer.
Won’t it just make me worry about things I can’t control?
No. A health assessment is designed to give you reassurance and confidence that you’ll have the information you need to help stay fit and well. The more tests you undertake, the more information you’ll have about your overall health – but those test results won’t be any use if you don’t understand exactly what they mean, or what you need to do next. Beware of assessments that promise you a series of tests but simply hand you a report packed with numbers and percentages without explaining exactly what your results mean.
We understand that test figures are not always easy to understand, so with every BMI Healthcare health assessment you get plenty of time to talk through your results with either a GP or highly qualified nurse. If there is a problem they can tell you right away what the best next steps are and ensure you get a quick referral for further tests and treatment. They are also on hand to explain what your future risk results actually mean and what you need to do to improve your future health. This is all part of the service, so you don’t need to worry that you are wasting your GP’s valuable time. All this information you’ll get about your health can be a lot to take in, but during your consultation with our medical experts you’ll receive a comprehensive, personalised report that you can look back over and check afterwards.
Paying for your health assessment
If you have private medical insurance you can use it to pay for your health assessment and any further treatment that may be required. The excess on most insurance policies is normally only £100-£300, and if your insurance is provided by your employer, making a claim will not impact on the amount you pay in premiums in the future. It’s simple to do: in most cases it’s just a quick phone call. You can also pay for your health assessment directly or spread the costs using your BMI Card.
Take your future into your hands with a BMI Healthcare health assessment. Know what to expect and what you can do about it to help you to stay well for longer. With our comprehensive choice of tailored health assessments you’ll get the tests and information you need to take control of your future health with confidence.
