Dry, dull and cracked – these are all common symptoms our skin can suffer from during wintertime. The harsh, dry air of the winter months can easily wreak havoc with our skin, but fortunately there are many things you can do about it.
Follow our tips for healthy winter skin:
1. Stay hydrated
It’s more important than ever during the winter to stay hydrated. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day will help keep you hydrated and reduce skin dryness. Herbal tea is also excellent for hydration. Carry a bottle of water or flask of tea when you’re out and about, then when you feel quenched you won’t have to panic.
This may seem like an obvious one, but keeping your skin well moisturised with a good quality facial moisturiser is a must during the winter. You may want to speak with a skincare specialist, to help you pick the ideal moisturiser for your age and skin type.
3. Use Protection
Yes - even in the winter months sunscreen is essential. Although it’s cold outside the sun is still strong, and overexposure can cause dryness and accelerated ageing. Ideally choose an SPF of 30 or above and apply it each morning as part of your usual beauty regime.
4. Take your vitamins
Certain vitamins are believed to promote healthy skin. These include Vitamin E, grape seed extract and evening primrose oil – just to name a few. You can buy these from most popular health food shops and they are a fairly affordable way to give your skin’s health a little boost this winter.
5. See a Professional
If you’ve tried all the above and your skin is still suffering, you may want to seek professional guidance. A dermatologist will be able to identify the type of skin problem you’re suffering from and recommend the correct course of treatment.
